The weather conditions in the north are constantly changing. As a result, you may experience extraordinary moments thought out the day without the unique and changing light. The colours you will see during the day will be almost as magnificent as the Northern Lights. The beauty of the scenery will stand out in contrast to the snow in winter. If you are travelling this far, we recommend that you experience as much as possible. Don`t miss the exciting trip!
We leave Tromsø early in the morning and drive to Sommarøya – an archipelago in the open sea about an hour west of the city. We don’t drive directly – we make a variety of exciting stops along the way to add to your experience.
On the way we stop at the strong tidal current Rystraumen and pass the 2000-year-old rock carvings (note: in winter, the can be snow-covered!).
The next stop will be the unique coastal community of Sommarøya, a fishing village situated beside the open sea. The scenery here is spectacular and the photo opportunities are endless. You will also find some of the most romantic white beaches in the region and see the distinctive rocky island of Håja, which provided the inspiration for Tromsø`s Arctic Cathedral. If you are very ambitious you can bring your swimsuit on the tour!
We will visit the restaurant at Sommarøya, eating traditional Norwegian waffles, coffee and tea. The traditional way to eat waffles in Norway is with brown cheese, jam and sour cream. Try it and you will love it!!
We will drive along two fjords to reach the next valley, Kattfjorddalen, which still shows traces for the glaciers that formed the valley during the last Ice Age, 12.000 years ago. Later we arrive at Kaldfjord where we turn left to experience the unique Ersfjord. This narrow fjord surrounded by high mountains is one of the most famous fjords near Tromsø. Northern Lights photos taken here have appeared worldwide.
If you are lucky, we will also experience Arctic wildlife, such as the white-tailed sea eagle, reindeer and various bird species.
P.S.: If your cruise ship is not able to reach Tromsø harbour (for example because of the weather), then we will return you the full amount! Please note that since 01.01.2023 the tour to Sommarøya includes visiting the Arctic Cathedral (1200 NOK/pp)
